Curriculum

Each student has different needs, needs that may be unable to be fulfilled in the traditional  school setting.  Students have found that their needs are being met through the Alternative Learning Lane.

 

 

The Alternative Learning Lane has the ability to bring great computer based education to your student, son or daughter, no matter where, no matter when. Your student will have access to the same classes that are offered on site at the Alternative Learning Lane in Ogallala, Nebraska. This K-16 course study can aid both the gifted student and the student who needs off campus help to obtain that much needed diploma. Virtual Learning

The Alternative Learning Lane utilizes Virtual Learning computer-based instruction. This system correlates to state and national standards and is flexible and modular - each class can be:
  • a complement to classroom learning - to address the individual and special needs of learners through enrichment and remediation

  • as a supplement to classroom learning, providing additional instruction and practice to the whole class or to any group of students

  • as a primary resource allowing the instructor to become a coach, counselor and manager.

     

    Class Descriptions

    Math I

    Revisits the basic roots of mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and then expands into fractions, decimals and simple measurement. (involves remediation through pre-algebra)     1 Semester

    Math II 

    Provides for the usage of good basics in the initial study of Geometry and Algebra concepts. Also includes lessons in problems solving and data calculation.    2 Semesters

    Algebra I

    This class sets the foundation for understanding and applying Algebra concepts. It concludes with the application of what has been learned.     1 Semester

    Algebra II

    This core takes the basics learned in (Algebra I) and applies them to the core teaching of Algebra. It concludes by meeting all requirements necessary to complete in high tech society.     1 Semester

    Geometry with Measurement-Geometry I & II

    Begins with basic Geometry Concepts with measurement activities involving all Geometric shapes. The class will conclude with a study of Coordinate Geometry. 2 Semesters

    Advanced Math Concepts

    Integrates Trigonometry functions and identities with the fundamentals of differential and integral Calculus. 1 Semester

    Language Arts I

    Begins with the parts of speech and simple grammar. It progresses to the study of mechanics and sentence structure. 1 Semester

    Language Arts II

    Expands the study of grammar and mechanics usage and concludes with simple writing application. 1 Semester

    Writing and Communication 

    This class begins with the writing portion where the student will expand sentence structure study, improve organization and conclude with the actual essay writing process. The communication portion of this class will help the student become secure in the development of interpersonal relationships. In both the private and work sectors of society.     1 Semester

    Writing in the Workplace

    This class is designed to aid the transition into the workplace for the Vo tech student. Students will receive instruction in writing business forms, note taking, writing directions and writing business letters and reports.     1 Semester

    Science Fundamentals

    Introduces the learner to the basic concepts of numerous scientific fields. (chemistry, physics, biology, earth science) This course also requires a 20 hour reading block in Reading Science Comprehension.     2 Semesters

    Advanced Science Concepts

    This class is a combination of Chemistry and Physics. In the Chemistry portion an emphasis will be placed on the measurement and manipulation of chemical substances. It will expand its study to include reactions and behavior of element groups. The Physics portion of this class will begin with the basics of Physical laws and work towards the ability to do complex problem solving.     1 Semester

    Chemistry

    Begins with atomic structure and bonding works through the periodic table and trends, formulation of compounds and ends with applications using formula equations. The cyber course is highly interactive and provides pre and post testing.     2 Semesters

    Biology

    Begins with the study of life and progresses from simple one cell animals to human beings. The course additionally includes all general and complex principals of Biology including cells make up - systems - mitosis - meiosis, genetic engineering, - food chains and disease. This cyber course if highly interactive and provides pre and post test.  2 Semesters

    Social Science Concepts

    This class is a hybrid that looks at the basic fundamentals of Geography, Economics., Political Science and History. This course includes some complex reading strategies in History and Social Science, with writing exercises.  1 Semester

    World View American History I

    This course covers from exploration to reconstruction. This class will incorporate a wide variety of learning methods including pre-post tests essay writing and specific skill activities.   2 Semesters

    World View American History II

    This class picks up at post-Civil War America and proceeds to the present day. This class will incorporate a wide variety of learning methods including pre-post tests, essay writing and specific skill activities.  2 Semesters

    World View European History I

    This course covers from Ancient Greece to the mid 1800's. This course incorporates a wide variety of learning methods including pre-post tests, essay writing and specific skill activities.  2 Semesters

    World View European History II

    This course begins with the impact of nationalism and progresses to Modern European Culture. This class will incorporate a wide variety of learning methods including pre - post tests, essay writing and specific skill activities.  2 Semesters

    Reading I

    Begins with elementary remediation studies in word meanings, teaches reading comprehension techniques and concludes with judging what you read. 1 Semester

    Reading II

    Begins with practical reading, expands skills and strategies by teaching interpretation of literature, poetry and drama. Concludes with the application of concepts learned. 1 Semester.

    Reading III

    A work skills class, this course teaches the learner to be proficient at comprehension of all reading strategies experienced in the work place. (memos, letters, references, directions, forms)     1 Semester

    Reading IV

    Challenges the reader to learn and expand their knowledge in all core classes, through exploratory reading. 1 Semester

    Work Skills

    This is a 9 week course which teaches the interpersonal skills needed to communicate and build good working relationships. It also includes some problem solving skills.
